The Siege of Athens

Sulla departs
to battle with
Mithradates
Most Greek cities
which have rebelled
submit to him
But Athens
rulled by Ariston
does hold out
The tyrant
expecting help from
Mithradates
And so Sulla
does besiege
ancient Athens

The siege is
long and hard
for Athens
The tyrant
lives in luxoury
people starve
Bitter slaves
send messages
to Sulla
detailing
how the walls
might be breached
This knowledge
allows Sulla
to enter Athens

Inside Athens
Romans rampage
sparing none
The starving
Athenians offer
feeble defence
Women and children
are slaughtered
with their men
Rivers of blood
flow freely
through the streets
