Dissention arose amongst the Danes
whether or not to heed Throndar's advice
Gorm and Thorkel said they should
Vermund and Hrolf said they should not,
at the courtyard's center stood a cauldron
covered yet emitting a strange brown smoke
Hrolf and Vermund wanted to approach it
to find out what contents lay inside
Undeterred by the other's objections
approaching the cauldron they lifted the lid
a cloud of mist enveloped the courtyard
Vermund and Hrolf collapsed like dead
As the mist spread it became hard to breath
The Danes had no choice but to flee
Once they were far away from the courtyard
They found that they could breath again
Seeing the streets bestrewn with treasure
Hrossthiof lifted up a chest full of gold and jewels
Its weight made him lose his grip and drop it
gold and jewels clanged against the paved ground
Suddenly those who were lying in the streets
arose to their feet and attacked Hrossthiof
His fellow Danes drew their swords to fight
the immaciated townsman that swarmed their friend.
The townsmen fell easily but they were so many of them
that joined in after their kinsmen were slain
The Danes could do nothing to save Hrossthiof
He was torn apart by the townsmen's knives
The cloud of brown mist from the courtyard
now began to spread into the cities streets
Fearing for the lives of his companions and king
thinking quickly Helgi devised a cunning plan
He picked up a trunk full of golden chalices
and all of the townsmen swarmed on him,
They forgot about Gorm and the other Danes
leaving them free to escape from the city.
