Seeing his men
could not compete with
King Gorm's men
Geirroth offered to
give them a prize
without further competition
He produced a map
with directions to
a wealthy city
Thorkel balked at first
saying they would rather
have their prizes now

Godmund intervened
suggesting that they
make a compromise
Geiiroth would fill
half their ship with
treasure from his palace
Then with the map
they'd sail to the city
and fill the other half
Both sides agreed
and the Danes sailed off
from Geiroth's shores

Fair winds propelled their ship forward
until they reached the mouth of a river
Following the map they rowed upstream
until they saw the city high up in the hills
Anchoring the ship on the river banks
they sent out a party to explore the city
Gorm and Vermund, Thorsten and Throndar
Hrossthiof, Helgi, Dag, Hrolf and Brodd
These nine scaled the steep road
that led up to the city's rusted gate
when they rattled the lock, the gate crumbled
Nothing to stop them, they proceeded inside

The city outskirts were totally deserted
crubling building and unswept streets
despite the disrepair, the odd gold coin
lay on the ground as is no one cared
As they walked on the Danes spied people
lying on the street thin and quite pale
like living corpses the people ignored them
going about their lives as if they weren't there
And from these people an aroma emmitted
bitter but enticing, unpleasant yet sweet
gold, silver and jewels scattered around them
disregarded by folk shivering in the heat

As they approached the city's center
the sky grew black the clouds turned gold
unlike at night they could see clearly
streets and buildings had a golden hue.
Everywhere they went they saw treasures
weapons, cauldrons, shields and jewels
Finally they reached a great courtyard
with half conscious people strewn all around
Throndar remembered the ring he'd been given
Its saphire had turned as black as coal
giving heed to the warnings of Amgerth
He urged the others that it was time to turn back
