The Quarrell Between Marius and Sulla

With Rome now at peace
the senate does decide
to send troops to the east
Sulla and Marius
both want the command
against Mithradates

Sulla as the consul
is chosen by the senate
to lead the campaign
But Marius' supporters
incite the masses to
rally on his behalf

The rally turns to riot
and Sulla does fear
for his very life
To save himself
he conceds the command
to the aging Marius

But the Roman troops
greatly prefer Sulla
to Marius as a leader
Behind Sulla they marched
into the streets of Rome
and take over the city.

Pressured by Sulla
the senate takes away
the command from Marius
then it declares him
an enemy of Rome
and condemns him to death

Marius has to flee
to save his life
he becomes a fugitive
With no place too call home
wherever he wanders
the old man is hunted
